The idea for Reference Material was sparked during an album debut at Public Records in 2022, where the legendary musician Ron Trent shared the story behind one of his tracks, referring to them as his "reference materials."

This moment inspired the creation of the magazine and its dedication to spotlighting the creatives, as an ode to their love and labor for their work.
